This story is not true, just combines thousand stories that we faced in Vietnam. We write this story for you to understand the worst case, and to attract your attention to issues that you could face. So, just imagine the case...
You wanted to rent a car, opened some Instagram page, and found a small shop with some activity (btw, most pages usually are dead there). You tried to find that business on Google, Facebook, or even in the state register, just to check if it was not a fake. 1st trap: 95% of Instagram pages are not a company; they don't have official documents for this business activity. They are just people who will give you a car, not pay tax, not report this, and will not be responsible for anything that happens on your trip. How to identify? - They will be absent everywhere except Instagram.
Ignoring this, you wrote, "Hey guys, I want to rent a car". You're lucky because in 10 hours, you got a response: "Okay, please let us know more details". You wanted to take a car in Nha Trang to Dalat for 3 days, starting from 20-01-2024, for 2 people, looking for the cheapest option with an automatic gearbox. In 90% of cases, you'll get an offer like "Mazda 5 - 3,000,000 VND for the trip". 2nd trap: "Check what is in the proposal". We heard stories about how old these cars are, like from 1999 or 2001. Hence, the year of the car, features (gearbox, climate system, GPS, etc.), and ODO are very important.
3rd trap with pricing: Heavily connected to timing. Oddly, 99% of local rental agents count by adding +0.5 or +1 day to 24 hours of rent. Their rental day is from 06.00 to 22.00, and if your rental period covers time from 22.00 to 06.00, they will add from 0.5 day to 1 day. It's not 24 hours as in Europe. Always convert TOTAL to DAILY, not the other way around. For us, it was 3m VND for 3 days. Calculation: 3m VND divided by 3 days = 1m per day. Add 0.5 day for overnight = 3.5m VND total.
Assuming we agreed to this pricing, to the old car, and to the fact that it's not even a legal car rental business. You'd usually have all conditions in Terms and Conditions documents, but here, you must ask for documents via Instagram. Typically, the responses are: 1st - "We don't send anything, just come and see"; 2nd - "Instagram isn't good for documents, let's connect via Telegram". Then you might receive a 1-2 page document with almost no terms. Trap #4: No agreement or low-quality agreement with no terms for your rent.
Trap #5: A large deposit taken without prior notice.
Trap #6: The car is dirty, both outside and inside.
Trap #7: Almost no fuel. Vietnamese agents often remove petrol just before giving the car to the client.
Let's say you agreed to this, signed the 2-paper document, and drove to a petrol station. Then, the car makes strange sounds. Trap #8: Car rentals in Vietnam often don't care about car condition.
In the middle of your journey, you're stopped by the police. Trap #9: Incomplete or absent documents. Remember, you need the car document, blue card, and insurance card.
Reaching Dalat, you think you can relax, but no. The rental agent calls saying, Trap #10: Extra 500,000 VND for going out of Nha Trang. This wasn't mentioned upfront or in the agreement.
Returning to Nha Trang, the car return process begins. Trap #11: Issues with the deposit return. Options include:
A) Not returned due to new scratches.
B) Not returned due to a new reason not in the agreement.
C) Not returned because they claim no deposit was taken.
D) No compensation for returning the car with a half petrol tank.
E) If agreed to return the deposit, deductions for additional km, destinations, cleaning fee, etc., which were never agreed upon or mentioned in the agreement.
